Argentina is moving closer to its next presidential elections. Meanwhile, Javier Milei’s government has presented its 2027 budget, forecasting 4% GDP growth, 18% inflation, and a trade surplus of more than US$15 billion.

Background on Argentina

For context, when Milei took office in December 2023, Argentina was closing the year with 211.4% inflation, a 1.6% contraction in GDP, chronic fiscal deficits and depleted reserves.

2023-2027 political program

Milei’s program has centred on fiscal discipline, spending cuts and deficit elimination. The results have been notable as the inflation has fallen sharply from its 2023 peak, Argentina has posted consecutive primary fiscal surpluses for the first time in nearly two decades, and the fiscal imbalance that long weighed on the economy has narrowed substantially.

But all of this has come at a cost, requiring considerable political capital along the way. With presidential elections approaching in October 2027, the question is whether the economic adjustment can now translate into sustained growth, and whether Milei can turn that economic story into Carlos Girdle’s tango, and “Volver”.
