Colombia: progressive reduction of working hours
In Colombia, a gradual reduction of the weekly working hours has been established. This measure aims to improve workers' quality of life without affecting their income or benefits. It is regulated by Law 2101 of 2021, which amends Article 161 of the Substantive Labor Code, and is being implemented in annual phases until reaching 42 hours per week in 2026.
Working hours reduction schedule
The implementation of the working hours reduction in Colombia is proceeding with consistent decreases. From July 15, 2023, the working week was reduced to 47 hours. On July 15, 2024, it was set at 46 hours per week. The next reduction, on July 15, 2025, will bring it to 44 hours per week, and finally, on July 15, 2026, it will reach 42 hours per week. It's important to note that this reduction does not imply a decrease in workers' salaries or social benefits.
Application of working hours reduction
The reduction of working hours applies to all employers and workers governed by the Substantive Labor Code in Colombia, encompassing both the public and private sectors. This includes large, medium, small, and micro-enterprises without distinction. The specific distribution of working hours must be agreed upon between the employer and employee, always respecting the limits established by the regulatory regime: between 4 and 9 hours per day, with one mandatory rest day.
